888Optimum’s Lee Mowle says he cannot wait for the 2013 British GT season to start after testing the new BMW Z4 GT3. The team is running a pair in the seven-round championship which kicks off at Oulton Park in April.
For Mowle, joint team owner and driver, it’s a step from the Ginettas he’s been racing since he started in 2010. He’s loving the extra power, grip and features the BMW brings.
“The car feels great,” Mowle told Racing.GT.
“The thing with me is I need to turn everything (traction control etc…) off, then drive it in terms of what I have experienced to date and then turn the toys back on to see what it’s like.”
He’ll be back at Silverstone the week after next with co-driver Joe Osborne to get more familiar with the car. “I just want to get comfortable with it, perhaps out-brake myself, possibly spin.”
888Optimum is aiming to do more European races and, in particular, 24-hour events. The recent success of the twice-round-the-clock race in Dubai and the 12 hours of Bathurst has fuelled the desire to push towards longer endurance. Mowle says he enjoys the strategy and teamwork demands which are magnified over longer distances.
The team uses specialist facilities at Base Performance Simulators and iZone Driver Performance to understand track layout and braking points. “Really useful for brand new circuits,” he said.
The 2013 driver line-up for is Mowle and Joe Osborne in car number 8. Steve Tandy and Dan Brown will drive car number 88. Three of the team’s drivers have previously won races in the BGT championship.
